When the Port Huron Hospital officials and staff decided to renovate their 30 year-old
Birthing Services department, the hospital took a team approach to the facility design. A core group of personnel including management, nurses, doctors and administrators, assisted with the planning of the new Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum Department (LDRP).
The design team was able to effectively bridge the existing wings, built in 1968 and 1975, to create a modern, efficient and comfortable area. Traffic flow, patient accessibility and emergency situations were taken into account as the designers created a bank of twelve suites. The interior palette was softened to eliminate the clinical feel of the space. This 5-phase renovation resulted in a comfortable space for expectant families, recovering mothers, and newborn infants.
