Allen Park High School - Performing Arts Theater

This 650 seat Performing Arts Center is a professionally equipped theater with a 32 set stage rigging and counterweight arbor system. The interior design of the space was reflective of the name of the school system. The white pillars in the house are to be reflective of “birch tree trunks” found in the parks around the community. The green colored acoustical panels in the ceiling of the house create the “tree canopies” of the birch trunks. Incorporating natural finished wood acoustical panels on the face of the balcony railing wall reinforces the use of wood as a theme in the space.

This theater incorporates a second floor balcony seating area with 125 seats, which creates a very intimate main level seating area for smaller venues of 525 persons or less. The balcony gave some other opportunities for side balcony viewing areas and for technical lighting positions and a performing “Juliet” balcony.

Back of house areas include a scene shop, dressing rooms, green room with the same size floor area as the performing area of the stage for rehearsal space. A full catwalk system that is open for instructional and lighting purposes is visible from the house and reveals the technical aspects of theater instruction. An orchestra pit with fillers is also included for up to 30 musicians. Stacked separate sound and lighting booths were designed at the back of the house with elevator access to both. Finally a follow spot room is located off the catwalk system in the back of the house.

Gallery display space was included in the lobby for integration of the visual arts with the performing arts.
